What is ube?
Ube is a purple yam native to the Philippines, often used in cooking and baking. It has a vibrant purple color and a slightly sweet, nutty flavor. Ube is commonly used in Filipino desserts, such as halaya (a sweet jam) and ube ice cream. It’s also incorporated into cakes, pastries, and other sweets, both in Filipino cuisine and increasingly in international food trends.
Ube vs. Taro | Is taro and ube the same?
While taro leans subtle and nutty, ube is distinctly sweeter and more dessert-leaning when prepared in the traditional Filipino way (ube halaya). Its flavor profile is unique, often described as a blend of vanilla and toasted coconut with a subtle, earthy nuttiness. In addition to its rich taste, ube is known for its naturally vibrant purple color, making it a distinct addition to everything from lattes and cocktails to classic cakes and ice creams.
