What is ube?
Ube is a purple yam native to the Philippines, often used in cooking and baking. It has a vibrant purple color and a slightly sweet, nutty flavor. Ube is commonly used in Filipino desserts, such as halaya (a sweet jam) and ube ice cream. It’s also incorporated into cakes, pastries, and other sweets, both in Filipino cuisine and increasingly in international food trends.
Is Taro and Ube the same?
Not quite! While both are beloved root vegetables, the ube vs taro debate comes down to color and flavor. Ube is a purple yam from the Philippines famous for its vibrant violet hue and sweet, vanilla-nutty taste—perfect for desserts. Taro is a starchy root with a lighter, speckled interior and a subtle, earthy flavor ideal for both sweet teas and savory dishes. Learn more about the difference between ube vs. taro here.
